The Alaska Space Grant's student rocket program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks uses a Yellowjacket launch pad for hybrid rocket research launches at the Poker Flats Research Range north of Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a 15-lb modified and stretched PML Aurora kit built by Randy Thomas. The rocket uses a 2-stage parachute recovery system with a Blacksky pyro II release mechanism for rear deployment of the parachutes from the same airframe tube. Recovery system uses a 3 ft drogue and 9 ft cross parachute made by Paratech Parachutes. Rocket flew at 0-F temp on a 6-sec burn K240 Hypertek hybrid motor. The rocket was equipped with Cambridge and RDAS accelerometer boards. There was also a custom built GPS payload made by a UAF EE grad student. Rocket was successfully flown, recovered, and will make many more flights. The Yellowjacket launch pad has been equipped with a 12 ft Blacksky ProRail and a Hypertek ground support system. Below are pictures of the rocket on the rail and in flight.
